VODACOM POWER TOUR
New format for production cars

The Sahara Production Car Championship will be spiced up in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, May 28.

The 2005 Vodacom Power Tour will visit Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante circuit, with a full racing programme to include Rounds 7 and 8 of the national title chase for passenger vehicles.

Already a highlight of the Vodacom Power Tour, the Sahara Production Car show will boast added attractions from next weekend.

Class A at the front end of the field will see the return ofFord’s Falcon V8, driven by veteran Steve Wyndham under the Ford Credit banner.

Funded by the SA Ford Dealer Council, the brutish car has been refettled from stem to stern, and it will contest the rest of this season's Sahara Production Car Championship.

Wyndham and Ford will not find calm waters on their return to the Class A pond. Leading the year’s title chase — and determined to keep matters that way at Aldo Scribante — will be Castrol BMW 330i works driver Anthony Taylor.

His closest title contenders — locked on identical point scores in second place — will be Gary Formato (Sasol AE Nissan 350Z) and Hennie Groenewald in the Castrol BMW team's second 330i entry.

On their heels — and absolutely able to win races next weekend — will be Reghardt Roets in the factory Squadra Corse equipe’s leading Samsung Alfa Romeo 147 GTA.

Backing Formato in the Nissan camp will be Duncan Vos with an identical Sasol AE 350Z, while the Alfa Romeo onslaught will be completed by Samsung147 GTA models in the hands of Morne Jurgens and Jimmy Auby.

The championship’s format change involved the founding of a new, separate class for cars with forced-induction petrol engines.

Dubbed Class T, the category will initially accommodate Martin Steyn (GP windscreens MINI Cooper S), Shaun van der Linde (Castrol MINI Cooper S) and Craig Nicholson (SabatMINI Cooper S).

The Sahara Production Car Racing Association believes that the new class could attract turbocharged vehicles like Opel’s Astra OPC, the Renault Megane Sport and Volkswagen’s new Golf GTi in the future.

Meanwhile, the change left Sasol Toyota RunX RSi driver Dave Compton as the current Class B points leader, with his nearest challenger Fiat SA team leader Mike O’Sullivan in a Motorola Fiat Stilo Abarth.

Third on the points ladder — following a string of consistent finishes — will be Garth Waberski in the Seagull Autogas turbodiesel Mercedes-Benz C270CDI.

Other front runners in the class should include Dawie Brough (Motorola Fiat Stilo Abarth), Brian Martin (Havoline Toyota RunX RSi), Angus Thompson (Topcar Fiat Stilo Abarth) and Claudio Piazza-Musso (Sasol Toyota RunX RSi).

The class will be rounded out by Hector North (Tommibar Mercedes-Benz C270 CDI), Delon Williams (Adrien Tee Peugeot 206 GTi) and Paulo da Cunha (DCM Line Boring Fiat Stilo Abarth).

The constrictions of the 2.48km Aldo Scribante circuit will ensure major high speed traffic jams in the 41-strong Sahara Production Car field, when the Class A and Class T cars begin to lap the Class Ccontenders.

The man to beat in Class C must be title leader Theunis Eloff, following five wins from six starts thus far in his Motorola Fiat Palio.

Taking him on with hostile intent will be people like Clint Weston (M&R DigiDoor Ford Ikon), Eckhardt Schoenknecht (Delo VW Polo TDi) and Molefe Lebethe in his Motorola Fiat Palio.

A tough midfield battle should rage between Guy Botterill (Bigfoot Fiat Palio), Rob Preuss (VW CitiGolf 1600), Trevor Tuck (Mosport Fiat Palio), John Kruger (Ford Fiesta) and Mark Silverwood in his VW Golf 1600.

Topcar Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4 - Early shower

It was all over before it even began for the Topcar Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4 at the sixth round of the Vodacom Power tour in East London, with a recurring ABS problem causing headaches for the mechanics and some anxious moments for the driver

There are three letters that strike fear into drivers and mechanics alike of the Sahara Production car championship… ABS. After a promising start to the season, the development and impressive pace of the Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4 to date, was halted due to a recurrent ABS failure on our Italian steed.

After replacing the wheel studs – which had sheared - and the damaged body work, the Bridgestone shod Stilo had encountered from an on track altercation at the last round of the championship in Kyalami, the Topcar team arrived in the coastal town ready for battle and in a confident mood.

But in the very first practice of the Friday, the Stilo’s ABS braking system failed due to an electrical fault brought about by the aftermarket fitment of a Motech ECU, to facilitate the engine remapping.

Without any manual bias adjustment fitted to the Stilo, all the brake bias is directed to the rear wheels. Thus under braking, the rear of the car locks and becomes very light causing it to swap ends at every opportunity.

With no apparent solution to the problem available at the time and the high speed nature of the circuit - which sees class B cars braking from over 230 km/h at some points – there was sadly no option but to withdraw the Fiat from the event and begin the long journey back to the Highveld.

But as they say that’s racing and with a new solution to the our ABS woes in the pipeline, we have now focussed our attention on the next round of the Sahara Production Car championship at Zwartkops raceway on the 27 August.

Stilos, Palios in the hunt
A NEW dynamic Fiat Abarth Racing Team makes its debut at Kyalami on Saturday.

Four factory vehicles including two Fiat Stilo 2.4 Abarths and two Fiat Palio II 1.6s will challenge classes B and C of the Production Car Championship.

Team principal Mike O'Sullivan and Dawie Brough will drive the fearless yellow Stilos, branded with black scorpions, in class B. Last year's Rookie of the Year, Theunis Eloff and up and coming Molefe Lebethe will drive the new black Palio 1.6 cars, identified with yellow scorpions, in class C.

The team will be based in a dedicated facility at Kyalami. The new 300m² headquarters will allow the team, consisting of 12 full-time staff members, to prepare, test and develop the vehicles under ideal conditions.

In addition to this four-car factory line-up, Fiat Auto SA will support the private entries of Angus Thompson and Paulo Da Cunha in two Stilo 2.4 Abarths in class B. Trevor Tuck and Guy Bottrell will also be supported in class C in their new Palio II 1.6s.

Michael Burkhart, general manager for marketing of Fiat SA said, "With eight entries in the championship we will be a force to be reckoned with. No other brand is so committed to the sport, to the public and to the development of SA racing."

The company's local racing started in 2003 when a few passionate staff members ran a Palio in the Northern Regions super hatch series and they won the class C regional championship.

Last year O'Sullivan, Theunis Eloff and Brad Annasis developed and drove the three Palios initially, the latter replaced during the season by Dawie Brough. Their efforts were rewarded in round 5 when O'Sullivan scored the team's first victory. The season ended with seven race victories.

These extended motorsport plans came to fruition in round 9 of the championship when O'Sullivan debuted the Stilo 2.4 Abarth in class B in East London and finished third.
